The Milkman’s on His Way was first published in 1982 and is one of the first queer young adult novels to appear in the UK. It tells the story of Ewan McCrae, a gay teenager living in Cornwall, struggling to come to terms with his sexuality. To explore his identity, Ewan leaves his claustrophobic home town for London, where he hopes to find people who are just like him.
For many gay teenagers of the early 1980s The Milkman’s on His Way was a rare chance to read a life-affirming story that put their experience at the centre.
